It was about 10 AM when we crossed into NC. Not fifteen minutes after we crossed the border the truck broke down. The engine would only stay running if the gas was to the floor, but it wouldn't rev above 1K RPMs. So there we were, me, my girlfriend, and a broken down truck, side of the interstate, 100 degree weather.
After a half hour or so of trying to make the truck run, we decided to call a tow truck. The insurance would pay for it so that was good, however, since I had only a vague idea of what was wrong, i didn't want to chance towing it somewhere near by where we might would have to wait for an indefinite amount of time. So, i called a guy near my house to come out and get us. Since money wasn't too much of an issue, it seemed like a good idea.
So for the next few hours we sat on the edge of the forest that was beside where we had broken down. Luckily the sun was in a position behind the trees so that where we were sitting (not in the truck) was shaded. Even then, the temperature had to be hitting low 90's thankfully, we had a mostly steady breeze, and i had packed a case of watter in the back of the truck.
Eventually, the guy showed up, we got the truck to the shop, and my girlfriend's mom picked us up. After running through all our options (car rental, my cousin, my brother, etc.) nothing came through that would allow us to get to the beach, we were out of luck. However, on the plus side, her parents agreed to let me stay with them for the rest of the week. It was nice!
